My best friend Whitney lives in Colorado. That’s 1,705 miles away. A 28-hour drive. 4 hours by plane. Yet she’s my biggest motivator to stay healthy and fit. Over the years, our communication has came and went, but around February of this year, after a long phone catchup session, we rekindled our friendship over fitness. Apparently something had sparked a flame in both of us to get off our butts and do something about our less than mediocre bodies.
We began texting each other recipes, sending each other photos of what we had eaten that day, sharing our workout plans, and calling one another all the derogatory terms for large animals if we skipped a workout. We got pretty creative with that last one.
Since we’re both self-diagnosed with ADD, we text each other different challenges and diets to try for the week. She’s got me to try paleo, no carbs after lunch time and some crazy teas with less than desirable consequences. I’ve made her follow all my new fitness ideas and she’s tried every single one of my workouts. One of her favorites is this 300-rep ab workout:
In 6 months, we’ve shared all our successes and failures and we have a lot to show for it. I’ve lost 17lbs and I’m in the best shape of my life. Whitney can do a one-handed handstand (that’s her in the photo). The best part about having a long distance gym buddy is having someone to answer to at the end of the day when they ask, “What did you do at the gym today?” If I say nothing, I can’t live it down. If I’m about to do something criminal like eat a second serving of cake, I can text Whitney and she’ll reliably tell me what a beached whale I’d be for doing it. It’s really beautiful.
I’ve had the idea for a blog for a while now and Whitney actually came up with the name. You+Me=Fit is kind of like our friendship, working together towards a common goal. She’s also started her own blog, Do I Have Abs Yet? It follows her on her often clumsy and always humorous journey to achieving the perfect the abs and the bangin’ body that comes with them. Look out for her as a guest writer here, and be sure to visit her blog to hear her side of our quest for fitness.
