Tomato, Tabata

I’ve been wanting to try Tabata training for a while but always balked at the idea of getting a good workout in only 4 minutes. Yesterday I stumbled upon this Self magazine article about a CrossFit-inspired Tabata style workout and decided to throw caution to the wind and try this format out. Here’s the idea behind Tabata:   20 seconds of high intensity exercise 10 seconds of rest 8 total 30 second “sets” 4 minutes total = 1 round 4 minutes of working out still sounds like tomfoolery to me, so I did five 4-minute rounds. And I was dying by ... Read More »

Return of the 2-Day Cleanse

It’s the start of a new week, so I’m kicking off Monday with the start of my favorite cleanse. For the next two days, I’ll be doing the Look Better Naked 2-Day Cleanse from Women’s Health Mag. This isn’t so much a “cleanse” as a short diet and a quick way to lose some water weight. I love doing this cleanse because I never feel hungry or tired while I’m on it. In fact, I always feel more awake and have plenty of energy to maintain my workout routine. I made my berry smoothie this morning and felt full until ... Read More »

The Average Girl’s Guide to Running

I hope you all had a great weekend! Mine was low-key and relaxing. I actually ate healthier and exercised more than I normally would, probably because all my friends are out of town. This post isn’t really a guide to running, since I’m no expert. It should be called “The Inexperienced Novice Clumsy Girl’s Guide to Stumbling and Shin Splints.” But I like to give myself more credit. On Friday, I completed an Insanity workout and ran two interval miles on the treadmill in 22:50. I did the first mile in 11:09 and pushed myself to complete one more. I ... Read More »

Workout Plan Planning

I can’t believe we’re a quarter way through December already! I’ve been so busy at work planning strategies and booking clients for the new year that I’ve been inspired to plan a little something for myself as well, in the form of a workout schedule. Tentative of course, since we all know how good I am at sticking to plans. I was working with Whitney last week to come up with a workout plan to reach my goal of 16% body fat safely in 6 months. We can up with a weekly schedule, but I was just having a tough time ... Read More »

No Ifs, Ands or Butts

Did you take the Don’t Be a Turkey challenge and do a cleanse or detox after Thanksgiving weekend? I’d love to hear what your thoughts were and find out if you saw any benefit. Today’s your last chance to leave a comment here for a chance to win a healthy goodie bag! —————————————————————————– If you’re been keeping up with my newly rediscovered fitness drive, I’ve been talking a lot about all the advice Whitney has been giving me, and if you’re lost about who she is or what role she plays in my life, here’s the breakdown. Whitney is my ... Read More »

Weekend Wrapup: Thanksgiving in Miami

Hey there! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend! I’m glad I got to see friends and family that I hadn’t seen in a while. I hadn’t realized how much I missed everyone, since I’d been so distracted by my new city.  When it came time to leave, I realized I really didn’t want to go. On Friday afternoon, I met up with Troy at the gym and killed it on leg day. After, we went to dinner at Ale House, and it was nice just to catch up and see a familiar face. I spent  all weekend eating leftovers, so getting in as much ... Read More »

Fitness: You’re Doing It Wrong

As part of my LA Fitness membership, I received one free personal training session. I went in on Tuesday thinking they were just trying to sell me a training package (which they were), but I came out feeling enlightened and very humbled. My trainer, Keith, and I sat down and he asked me a series of questions about my exercise, diet, and sleep habits.  I felt comfortable with him right away, and he trains figure and bikini competitors, so he understood exactly the type of shape I want to be in. I described to him what I eat and how ... Read More »

Training For My First Race

I finally decided I’m going to run a 5K. I’m going to stop talking about, pre-register, and actually do it. I can’t tell you how many races I “was supposed to” run before, until deciding at the last minute I was too out of shape or not training far enough in advance to be able to run. That’s why I’m going to whip out the Visa, cough up the $30, and stop making excuses. I’m pre-registering for the Gainesville Beer Run 5K on September 28th. What made me so motivated to run in this race? Well, there’s beer involved, for ... Read More »

Cleanse Fail & Cardio Win

Day 1 of the 2-Day Cleanse went well, for the most part. Day 2, not so much. To give myself a little credit, this is the second time I’m doing it, and the first time I stuck with it all the way. Yesterday started out great with breakfast, lunch and my two allotted snacks. After work, I went to the gym and could barely get through Insanity without feeling dizzy or seeing stars. I rescind what I said yesterday about being able to do the cleanse and sticking to your normal workout routine. If your normal routine is something as ... Read More »

I Survived Insanity Day 1

Wow! I had the most intense workout today that I’ve had in a long time. I did Day 1 of Shaun T’s Insanity workout, followed by an intense 12-minute Crossfit WOD I found on BlondePonytail.com, modified for my gym. Day 1 of Insanity is a fitness test. I did 8 exercises, as many reps in good form as possible for one minute, followed by one minute of rest. I’m supposed to take the fitness test every 2 weeks to gauge my progress, and I definitely didn’t expect it to feel like a whole workout. I encourage you to take the fit ... Read More »
